William Butfoy death around 1838
« on: Sunday 01 October 17 06:02 BST (UK) »
I have been hunting for days, for the death or mysterious disappearance of William Butfoy in the Hackney/Bethnal Green area.
He married Charlotte Everett in 1836 at St Matthew, Bethnal Green, fathered a child or two (Emma Butfoy, Harriet Butfoy) then Charlotte shows up as a widow in the 1841 census, and their daughter Eliza Butfoy married in 1840, noting her father as William Butfoy, deceased.
I have searched the 3 main sites for his death with no luck but given the number of different variations the name Butfoy is transcribed as, I think I need a fresh set of eyes!
There is the possibility that he ran off and left the family, as Charlotte appears to have given birth in the Bethnal Green workhouse 3 times before their marriage using her maiden name (she may have died there in 1844 as well) and was possibly not a great family man... :-[
Any thoughts or ideas would be gratefully accepted.

Oh, and he was born in 1798 - parents William and Ann..

Thanks Rosie, you are right.
I think I just assumed it, as her daughter married the year before, and stated her father was deceased, and as she was living with her 2 younger daughters in 1841, presumably as the head of the household.

The 1841 census, looked at through FamilySearch, states she and the girls were in an Institution?

Weaver Street, Bethnal Green. As far as I can make out, it was a house.

Hi Jennifer, that settlement refers to another William Butfoy, 'my' William's father.

Caroline.

Looks to me like he was baptised on 11 Oct 1795

EDIT: Ah, there is a burial on 15 April 1798 which might be that one (no age clues)

Hi StevieSteve, I believe the 1795 baptism was his brother - so annoying when parents renamed children after dead siblings!
