Archibald could come from naming him after a prominent family friend or minister

I don't know if this is relevant but if you go on the Maxwell Ancestry website and key in Gibson  a couple of Archibald Gibson's come up in a limited census done in 1831 Melrose  / Lindean generally the census info on site is free, but their is a payment to access this info

Have come across those names before but have not been able to prove them as there is not a record of them having an Archibald. He is listed as being born in Roxburgh while their children were born in Crailing, which I know is not far away. They may indeed be connected but this "missing" Archibald is the problem.
The 1851 census just says 'Roxburgh'. There's a good chance that this means the county of Roxburgh, not the 'parish' or the 'village' of Roxburgh. There are 34 parishes in the county of Roxburgh including Crailing, Ednam, and Yetholm.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
