According to the The Scots Magazine, Sunday, June 1, 1823, p.765. David COSSAR and William ROBERTSON pleaded guilty to housebreaking and theft "being habit and repute thieves" Sentenced to 14 years transportation. "Robertson behaved in a most audacious manner, and in reply to the Judge's admonition  to amend his life, observed that he 'had led a very good life'".

Thank you so much for the conviction info.

Am I able to access this information myself (Scots Magazine) and how do I go about doing it?

Hi,

The crime.

British Library Newspapers.

British Chronicle

If you are in Australia, you can have access to British Newspapers online through the National Library of Australia eresources, if you have a library card (free to Australian residents). This is the page where you can obtain a library card if you don't already have one.  ;)

Another item in the Caledonian Mercury, Thursday, September 4, 1823, Issue 15915.
"On Tuesday, the following convicts left the jail, preparatory to being sent to their final destination, viz John Wright for life; David Cossar, John Smart and David Robertson 14 years, and John Bailie, seven years."

There are also a few mentions of David on Trove
http://trove.nla.gov.au/

including this death notice in 1831
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article2200845
"On Sunday last, after a lingering illness of nearly three years, David Cossar, Compositor, an old and faithful servant in the Office of the Sydney Gazette. On Tuesday his remains were followed to the grave by his fellow workmen, on whose bounty he had for some time depended for subsistence, and principally defrayed the expenses of his funeral."

Does this sound like your David? The occupation fits, but he sounds like he had been in the Colony for much longer than 7 or 8 years?

Thanks everyone for the interesting information. Much appreciated and yes, good idea to merge the threads.

Any information of David Cossar's birth - date and where - and names of  parents or siblings, would be great.

Thanks,
