Birth certificate with limited information
« on: Monday 02 October 17 14:31 BST (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone have advice on how to get an NI birth cert when all I know is full name exact date of birth in Belfast father's full name and mother's first name.
It seems that to apply for certificate I need a more exact place of birth, Mother's maiden name and her address.
The information on Ancestry doesn't show dates so I don't know how to check which is correct and anyway can I order by giving volume rage and reference?

did you check to see if it is online?

or is it recent?
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

It may be on Ancestry but that doesn't give enough details to know if it's the right one (I can't even see what year the entries are for) also as far as I can see to order the certificate you have to already know all the information not just the volume and page like for England and Wales.

That birth is less than 100 years ago, and will therefore not be available online at GRONI.

Like a lot of countries, NI doesn't permit you to buy a certificate unless you can supply all the data they ask for.

My friend is trying to get the birth certificate for his deceased father, we have an address in Belfast but it may not be the address at time of birth and have no one to ask for the mother's maiden name.  Is this a dead end?

Hi,
No it's certainly not a dead end.
Fill out all boxes, for the box that says "mother's maiden name" write in that "please see my additional info below"

There is a box at the end of the page for you to type in any additional info into. In this box , explain this is your father, and so on, give them as much as you can , including your reasons.
For address, give them the area , and you could also write "  I think" (which I did on one of mine)
I have successfully ordered recent  certs from them without giving them all of their required details- because I did not know every detail.
I know what it says on their site about required info, but it is  certainly is not true in  my own  experiences .
Make good use of that additional info box.
Kind regards

If you phone GRONI they are usually pretty helpful, and you can pay for the cert over the phone.
