Citizenship details in US Census 1900
« on: Monday 02 October 17 20:29 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a question about an entry in the US Census for 1900. The birth is given in columns 7 as 'Dec 1893' and the immigration date in column 16 as 1894. The number of years in the United States (Col 17) is given as 6, which just doesn't tie in with the birth date. Is this some 'fiddle' to speed up the US nationalisation process? And no one notices it!?

And just to confuse this even more, I'm sure the immigration date was October 1896!

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

The number of years in the United States ties in with the immigration date - immigrated in 1894, been 6 years in US as the year is now 1900.

The birth date has little/nothing to do with the number of years in the US, as they can immigrate just after birth or many years after birth.

I've attached a cropped passenger list document; the forum restriction of file sizes stops me attaching the full documents. The people in question are the Taylors on the passenger list (lines 10, 11 & 12) which is supposed to be October 1896. They departed on 19th October 1896 from Glasgow aboard the Anchor Line’s SS Furnessia and arrived in New York on 26th October. Robert Taylor, father, emigrated at a different date.

To see the US Census 1900 form, search in LDS for Bertha Taylor, birth December 1893, father Robert Taylor, living in Philadelphia. Within the resulting document, the family is at lines 60-64. 'Effa' (Euphemia) was born in Philadelphia.

If the family (wife and two oldest children - not sure when Robert emigrated) emigrated in 1896 then the dates and years in US in the census don't match - unless wife and oldest daughter first emigrated in 1890, returned to Scotland for the birth of Bertha and the re-emigrated in 1896 - and not 1894 as given in the census. I've no evidence for that (and not really researched that as a possibility). Or I've mixed up two families! Or I'm having a senior moment!

Looking at the 1910 census, they are fairly consistent with their 1900 census immigration dates
Robert Taylor - 1889
Elizabeth (both) - 1890
Bertha - 1895

Perhaps they did immigrate twice?

The information is only as good as the knowledge of the informant.  Ages, nationality and immigration dates are not always true facts. It is not unusual for dates and aged not to tally.
