Gane and Knight in Harwich
« on: Tuesday 03 October 17 17:18 BST (UK) »
Doing research for a friend and have a problem and am hoping someone here might be able to help. I've hit a large rock!

Thomas GANE married Ann KNIGHT 12 May 1806.
Thomas was a mariner, poss born in Dedham, Essex, son of Thomas & Mary.

Thomas and Ann had 7 children. I have no problem with them.
Their second son was Thomas Poole Gane, b 7 Aug 1811 and poss died 1840?

Thomas' wife, Ann, died abt 1826 in Harwich.

I then found 2 more children....both born and bap in Harwich
Catherine b 15 Apr 1830
Isabella b 29 Aug 1835
Children of Thomas & Catherine KNIGHT.

My question is this:
Is the Thomas who married Catherine KNIGHT the same one as married Ann KNIGHT?
OR
Is the Thomas who married Catherine KNIGHT Thomas senior's son, Thomas Poole Gane?

Someone sent me the Suffolk Marriage Index for a marriage of Thomas Gane, widower, to Catherine Knight on 28 Aug 1830 in Ipswich

I have found Catherine Gane on the censuses as shown below:

Possibility. 1841 Census. Kingshead Street, Harwich. Catherine Gane 32, Catherine 8, Arabella [Isabella] 6, Edward 3 and Philip 1. HO107/344/4/1

Possibility. 1851 Census, Dovercourt, Harwich. Catherine Gane, widow and pauper 45, Edward Thomas, son 13, Philip son 11 and Robert Knight, visitor and carpenter 81. HO107/1780/136/20

I think Ann Knight was b abt 1787
And acc to the censuses, Catherine KNIGHT would have been b abt 1806.

It doesn't help that I can't find a death for either Thomas Senior or Thomas Junior.

Can anyone help me out here please.

The only death I can see in 1840 for a Thomas Gane is Sept qtr Bath reg district - The GRO index gives his age as 50.

Rosie, thank you.

Exactly...nowhere near Essex.

My question mark after his death date of 1840 was deliberate because that piece of information came from a public tree on Ancestry. Whilst sometimes these trees can be correct and some can give a guide, I NEVER accept their information. I have to check it out!!!  (Lesson learned very early on when I first got into this obsessive hobby!)

Confused me as well!
They were baptized, along with quite a few others, at St Nicholas as GANE, on the very eve of civil registration, 30 June 1837.
Catherine born 15 April 1830, Isabella 29 August 1835

Marriage bond/allegation re Thomas Gane 1806 indexed on SEAX
We can at least see the allegation on FamilySearch, names Ann's father

I see Thomas was a mariner.
What makes you think they were actually Knights? Or am I being stupid?

John,

THAT was a great find - thank you.
Now we have Ann Knight's father named and confirmed as Robert.
Thank you so much.
