I believe the one you can't find in the 1901 is found in the 1911 with his brother Ernest and is the one identified by Rosie as having the mother Martha A Fitton later Chambers.

Guesswork (hopefully intelligent) is admitted this time but based on joining the following dots:
(anyone can join in:
1891 Joseph and Martha A Fitton have (among others) a son Ernest aged 3 weeks. Royton census.
1894 a John Fitton registered Oldham dist
1897 Joseph Henry Fitton dies Oldham age 31 (1871 has him as Joseph Hy)
1901 Blank for all
1911 Ernest Fitton aged 20 and John Fitton aged 17 are visitors to a family Dean in Royton- Census - Martha Dean was the bride of a Joseph Fitton in 1881
1915 Martha A Fitton marries Chambers

Speculation - The Dean family are related to Martha Fitton (nee Dean).  Ernest and John are Martha's sons.  Their His father died when John  was 3.

1416 Pte John Fitton (Rosie) names (1915) his mother Martha A Fitton (at that time) in his soldier's will,  When the gratuity is sent (1919) to his mother she is Chambers .

However, caveats follow - all that doesif that hangs together for folk, is perhaps identify the man referred to by Rosie all those posts ago (acknowledgements for the Effects Reg also).
It doesn't link him (although I haven't tried hard) to Luke's 1859 family in Oldham.

We need to hear from Luke regarding the dob/age query.

Yes it looks good enough for me.

I agree with all that Max. So I think the answer to Luke's question in the first post is  - No, it isn't your John Fitton.

Yes would agree not Luke's John Fitton

So my gut feeling from last night was right?

Have you also checked that he was still alive in 1911 (family stories can sometimes get confused) - there are 2 John Fittons born 1859 who died in Oldham in 1907 and 1908?

Hi groom
Yes, your gut feeling was right (as it usually is!)

But the mother's maiden name for those three children - John James, Amy, Ethel, seems to be Johnson?
Whereas Luke said Mary was Taylor. Unless she was a widow
John

I think we need to know how Luke knows that John Fitton married Mary Taylor. The only marriage I can see is one in 1880. There is a marriage of a John Fitton in 1878 possibly to a Mary Johnson. Both in Oldham.
