Many thanks for sorting out  the "aside" but any thoughts on ;-
I have a James marrying Eliza Bacon, Jun. 1883 Belper. from census records i am trying to establish when he was born,
Looking on Free BMD !837 to 1870, there are no James Melbournes matching any of the dates shown in the census's
                                                  Thanks, bodger

Perhaps if you obtain the marriage certificate, that might throw some more light on the matter.  You will perhaps confirm his father, and from that earlier census entries. etc. etc. ....

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

The obvious candidate is James son of William and Hannah. 1881 has him b Belper c1859, matching 1891 and 1901, and with the same occupation as James on 1891.

there's an 1861 marriage of a William Melbourne and hannah Sims. Here's a potential for Hannah on the 1861 census - two grandsons in the household who match the two oldest Melbuorne children in 1871

Saml Sims    56
Ann Sims    53
Hannah Sims    28   <<<
Thirza Sims    16
Eliza Sims    15
Herbert Sims    13
Walter Sims    4 - grandson
Jas Sims    2 - grandson

RG 9, 2510, 4, 1

Interesting birth registration!

SIMS, JAMES  MELBOURNE
no mother's maiden name
Q4 1858  BELPER  Volume 07B  Page 386

Bumbleb, Because of fiscal commitments as a pensioner i reserve  Certs.mainly   for direct descendants . Thank you

Mabel, Your detective work makes sense, i had provisionally attached William & Hannah, and it would appear that they are the right ones?. interesting re the grand children matching, i know it's circumstantial but i will follow that direction and see where it leads .
                   Thank You Both, bodger
