L written to the left of marriage cert.
« on: Wednesday 04 October 17 16:38 BST (UK) »
My great-grandfather's marriage certificate has a capital L written to the left of the entry. Just wondering what this means?

No idea. Can you post an extract so we can see it?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Not seen this before, so no idea really.  Could it be connected to the fact that the Marriage was conducted by "The Free Presbyterian Church", rather than, say, Church of Scotland.    Could the "L" signify, somehow, that this Church was recognised by The Registrar as authentic, or something?.  I note that this Church is still very much active today.   http://www.fpchurch.org.uk/location/glasgow-congregation/

Just checked on Talking Scot - it seeems to mean Landward:

Quote
At the end of 1854, there were just over 900 parishes. For registration purposes, they were succeeded by over 1000 Registration Districts. Most of these were based on the parishes, with a quantity of the parishes being split into two halves - Burgh and Landward (town and rural). Many of these Burgh and Landward RDs were re-united after less than five years. In many cases the registrar marked B or L in the margin of the certificate for a number of years after the re-uniting.

A new one to me too  :)

Also on SP:

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/research-guides/parishes-and-districts

Scroll to Registration Districts:

Quote
The top of each register page provides the parish or district name and the county or burgh. You may also find that the registrar has written B or L in the margins of the page to indicate whether the entry relates to the burgh or landward part of the district. Each registration district has a reference number. For some districts this RD number can remain the same over many decades.

Ah, thanks, Gadget, that makes sense.

I am now worrying because I have not noticed this before - having looked at literally thousands of marriage certificates over the years, and never noticed this, I have to doubt my own powers of observation :(
