Hi lancsann,

It's the notice of Intended Marriage that gives both ages as 21 - hence my guess that they were born c.1758. Are these notices usually accurate in terms of age?

 Name     Richard Swainson
 Event Type     Intended marriage
 Event Date     20 Oct 1779
 Residence Place     Liverpool, Lancaster, Chester
 Gender     Male
 Age     21
 Marital Status     Batchelor
 Spouse's Name    Isabella Hornby
 Spouse's Residence Place     Liverpool
 Spouse's Age     21
 Spouse's Marital Status     Spinster

The actual licence says "twenty one years and upwards" which meant they said they were over twenty one so no parental permission needed.

On the other hand people have been known to add a year or two to their age so that they do not have to ask their parents permission

After ordering the marriage certificate of Samuel and Sarah, I'm now struggling to go any further back too!

I'll keep looking and post here if I find anything.

I did find that Richard and Isabella's son, Richard, was a Prisoner of War in France in 1814. He does disappear after that but it was an interesting thing to discover!  :)

I have found a baptism record for a Richard Swainson (spelt Swanson):

Name: Richard Swanson
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 7 Dec 1750
Baptism Date: 28 Dec 1750 at St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Father: William Swanson (Occupation: Mariner)

This would make him 29 when he married Isabel/Isabella Hornby in 1779.
