Help finding Fallen/Fallon in Heworth or surrounds
« on: Wednesday 04 October 17 18:31 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to trace my direct ancestors who are last seen in Heworth in 1871.  They are Thomas and Bridget FALLEN (family later known as Fallon)

Occupation:
Ag lab as per census 1841
Labourer as per census 1861
Labourer (dec) as per marriage cert of son Michael 1897

This is what I know of Thomas.  Also that he is Irish very possibly from Sligo as his daughter Catherine (next door in 1871) was born there.

1841: Census Howgate, Maxwelltown 26
1851: Census 23 Market St, Maxwelltown 40
1861: Census Main St Haltwhistle Northumberland 50 (I'm confident this is the right family as daughter Margaret is born in Scotland.)
1871: Heworth (nr Ship Inn), Durham 60 (next door to the Reillys)

After this time I lose trace of Thomas and Bridget.  In order to try and find a death cert would I be correct in thinking Heworth would be classed as "Gateshead" for certs? Is that true pre-1889?

Thank you,
Pam

According to the list here https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/places/regindex2-2.pdf Heworth was in Gateshead RD from 1837 to 1938.

Had a look at the index in Durham Records Online - there are burials showing for a Thomas Fallon in 1874 (b 1818 so age out?) abode Heworth Shore and for a Bridget Fallen in 1891 (b 1821) abode Felling. I was unable to see corresponding entries for these in the groindex.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

GRO Index shows Thomas Fallor, 56, 1st q. 1874, Gateshead 10a, 508.
freeBMD shows him as Thomas Fallon.

GRO Index and freeBMD: Bridget Fallan, 69, 1st q. 1891, Gateshead 10a, 495

I've been trying to find this Bridget in the 1881 census but no luck so far.

Have you checked out all their children in 1881 to see if either Thomas or Bridget, or both of them, were there?

Thank you so much!  They are good leads.

They had 3 children I know of:

Catherine Reilly who is in Heworth in 1881 but the parents don't seem to be near her anymore, so have moved or passed. I've followed her children through as well and some are in Felling.

Michael never moved with them he stayed in Dumfriesshire, Annan.  He is my direct and the only recorded connection I see post 1851 is that Brigitta Fallen is named as "Matrina Fuit" on his children's (Catholic) baptisms. This stops in 1871 even though he has other children.

Margaret I think died in 1871, reference Gateshead 10a 466 age 22.

Time to order some certs I guess.  Though the English death certs are barren of information compared to the Scottish ones  :(

Also with regard to birth date estimates, they are not paragons of consistency! But 1821 doesn't sound close but name and location is good.  One to investigate - thank you!

1841: Census Howgate, Maxwelltown 26
1851: Census 23 Market St, Maxwelltown 40
1857: Informant on granddaughter Margaret Reilly's birth Annan
1861: Census Main St Haltwhistle Northumberland 52

Crikey, I've been going over what I know from the Scottish records and there are other children! They are born before 1851 and aren't on the census so I don't think this is going to go well.  It's amazing that after 17 years research you can always find new information!
