Flecken-Kiefer occupation
« on: Wednesday 04 October 17 21:03 BST (UK) »
Hello all, I have an ancestor whose occupation is listed as a Burgher and Flecken-Kiefer. I understand a burgher is a citizen of a town, but what about a Flecken-Kiefer? Kiefer is a variant of cooper, but Flecken means to stain or something, right? Some kind of barrel painter? Thanks.

P.S. I heard one person somewhere suggest that Flecken also refers to a place/town, and kiefer can mean a cooper or also a wine maker. This ancestor in question was a member of the village council. Might he have been the town's wine maker?

*edit* The place in question is a village in Baden Wurtemburg called Kirchberg an der Murr, in the late 1700's.

Hi Dave, sorry, no I don't have the original text. It's from a tree made by a distant German relative online on RootsWeb WorldConnect. The reference he cites is the Kirchberg Sterberegister which he says describes this ancestor upon his death as " 62 Jahre 2 Monate alt, Bürger und Flecken-Kiefer."
