Royal Car Foot
« on: Thursday 05 October 17 09:40 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have a potential ancestor James Mann, recorded in the Suffolk Marriage Index Transcription as marrying, Susanna Maria Hubbard on 12 October 1804 in Woodbridge. His parish is recorded as "2 Batt Royal Car Foot". Can anyone suggest which Regiment this may be please? Cheers Pete

Regt's. of Foot were preceded by a number. At this time there were well over 100 such Regt's.
It could be a County Regt. Car could be Cam (26th. Cambridge) or Cameronians.
Not sure if either of these had the royal title c. 1800.

Thanks Jim, I had scrolled lists of Regts. online looking for a named one that would fit "Car" without luck. I was beginning to wonder if it might be a transcription error or that abbreviations were simply done in a different manner back then. Appreciate your suggestion cheers Pete

Found this on Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Regiments_of_Foot):

The 1751 warrant confirmed the royal titles or other special designations of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 18th, 21st, 23rd, 27th and 41st Regiments.

Which narrows the list a little ;D!

You need to see the original entry in order to get a better idea. It would make more sense if it said Royal Regt. Foot.

Thanks KGarrad, I'll check which regt. each number refers to. I think your right Jim always a possibility of transcription error. Means I would have to venture to Suffolk, so might be a while before I crack this one. Thanks again, Pete.
