Anderson from Gladesville Sydney.
« on: Friday 06 October 17 08:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am searching for my paternal grandfathers family.

All we know is:
Harold Herbert Anderson b 1908 Gladesville, Sydney, NSW, AU,  d 1989 Tauranga NZ.

He was always known as Herb / Herbert...

Father William John Anderson d circa 1920
Mother Florence Wright d circa 1911

Brother Arthur - was older. Arthur looked after Herbert when the father died until Herbert run away after a disagreement.

Sisters, 3 x all named after flowers.

Herbert married Eileen Mary Mulhurn on 25 Nov 1939 in Auckland, NZ

We can not find any birth certificates etc for him or any of his family. My grandmother wrote to BDM NSW and got a reply back stating there is no record of Herbert - this was to prove his age for the pension.

What physical documents I do have or confirmed info:

Tax stamp book from Victoria, in the name of H Anderson which shows he worked at Irymple Packing Company in 1933 and 1934, which is in Irymple, VIC, close to Mildura. His address is stated as Merbein, VIC in the tax book.

He was working at Eurolie Station, Hay NSW, when my grandmother meet him. She worked there too as a governess. He was still working there in 1938 as I have a Eurolie Partoral Company wage slip with dates on it from Jan to Nov 1938.  There is also a electoral roll entry that backs this up.

My grandmother met Rose his sister in Melbourne, AU, in the 1930's.

His marriage certificate states:
Name: Harold Herbert Anderson
Age: 31
Birth Place: Sydney
Father: William John Anderson, Seaman
Mother: Florence Anderson, nee Wright

I have asked my uncles and aunties if they know anything, and they have all told me that he would tell them anything when they asked.

My father, uncle and myself have all done DNA tests, which have turned up nothing on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA and GEDMatch.

Any information or help would be amazing..

It looks like his birth could be   registered in South Australia
This from Australia Births

There a re a couple of possible entries for Arthur but the index gives no details of parents and is just 1907-1916. Best I can find-sorry

Could you post all the children's names, if deceased.

If not could you PM them, please?

From where have you got the approx dates of death for Florence and William and where did they die?

This is not the person of interest.   This man died in 1970 and served in WW2.

Just a gentle reminder that we are expected to transcribe from other websites which includes subscription only genealogy sites.

Jamjar

We have wondered that also. He gave no clues. He did talk about the name Anderson coming from Sweden. Whether that means he came from Sweden or not no one knows.

We also wondered if he had done something bad or in trouble with the law and changed his name - however he never seemed like that kind of person.

He talked about wandering around the outback during the depression. So I guess he could have come to AU as a teenager or in early 20's.

He told mum one day he was raised by aborigines when she was asking about his family (he also said why would I tell you anything if I won't tell my own children), so we wondered if he had aboriginal blood in him, but dad's and my DNA tests have ruled that out. Ancestors from northern europe and UK.

I have wondered if maybe he was born in UK or Europe and immigrated, but I haven't found any records.

My Grandmother also said there was a Florence Wright who run a boarding house in Melbourne where he stayed, so maybe he just picked her name to put on the wedding certificate.

All his siblings I am guessing are dead. According to him their names where:
Arthur
Rose
2 x more girls named after flowers. (mum seems to think one may have been called Ivy.)
We don't if the girls name were real names, or maybe second names.

The mother died when he was very young. The father when he was in his teens.

All Herbs children are still alive living in NZ and AU. And they all know nothing.

There is an AU military record from 1916 for Arthur William Anderson, who has listed as next of kin his father William John Anderson, of Glebe Road, Glebe Point, Glebe NSW. But I have no idea if this is a match or not.
