Donald & Lizzie MacAskill - South Uist
« on: Friday 06 October 17 12:23 BST (UK) »
I came across this couple when researching for a friend.

Donald MacAskill was born circa 1882 and his wife Lizzie nee Macphee in around 1885. They appear to have had two children, Malcolm ca 1920 and Mary Margaret ca 1922.

I have been unable to find a marriage for Donald and Lizzie nor a record of their children's births.

Nor have I been able to find them on the Scottish censuses.

Any help in solving this mystery would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks,  Howdie

There is a marriage for a Donald McAskill to a Lizzie McPhee 1915 Boisdale using fuzzy matching on Scotlands People Ref 118/36

Birth for a Malcolm McAskill 1919 Boisdale ref 118/316
Might be worth a try

Ooh er,

Thanks for that Rosie. I thought I had used the surname variants tab - but maybe not :-(

Best wishes,

Eliza/Elizabeth/Lizzie's mother was Mary MacDonald (unmarried) i.e. Lizzie was born Eliza MacDonald 15/04/1884 but obviously used her father's name in life.

Donald & Elizabeth/Eliza/Lizzie had 2 more children besides Malcolm & Margaret.

Their son was named after Donald's father & their dau was named after Lizzie herself  ;)

MCASKILL JAMES 1917

Thanks Annie,

I've got Eliza's marriage certificate and on that she gives her father's name as Malcolm Mcphee, farm labourer. I don't think her parents ever married. Mary always appears on the census as her maiden name.

The only Malcom Macphee I found on South Uist in the census was a Malcolm Macphee aged 17 years living at 12 Smerclate in 1881 working as a farm worker on a farm there. That would give him a birth in 1863/4. There was one in Barra around that time but I doubt I shall ever track Mr Macphee down. It is possible he moved to Glasgow.

Kind regards,

Howard

No. 12 is the Schedule No. & his PoB is given as S/Uist
James MacAskill's family are 4 crofts away (Sch. No. eight) at Croft. No 406/2
The croft was divided between brothers Roderick & James (Donald's father).

Possible births...

MACPHEE MALCOLM 1864 (most likely I think)?
118/3 7 Boisdale

MACPHEE MALCOLM 1862 (age a bit out)
118/1 29 Benbecula

Couldn't find him on Uist in 1871 but...

A possible;

MCPHEE MALCOLM 6
108/ 5/ 6 Barra, Inverness

Living with widowed mother Johanna 30 & siblings John 9, Hector 8, William 5, Catherine 4 & Mary 1.
PoB now given as Barra but there are no births for that name in 1864 +/- 2yrs on Barra.

I haven't checked Benbecula census yet.
