Searching on FindMyPast for events in India
« on: Friday 06 October 17 16:33 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know how to search on FindMyPast for events in India without getting pages of results in Indiana please?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I chose Overseas/Unknown for the category of search, rather than England, World etc. and then entered India in the "Where" field.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you. I'll see if that works.

Or via the A-Z search put in India.
https://search.findmypast.co.uk/historical-records

Seems to be more hits than via 'special collections' on the page dawnsh found?
There's more than on my screenshot - couldn't fit them all in!  :)

Thanks again. The solution suggested by BumbleB does work - allows searching for a name and then India, presumably searching all the India Office collections that are available on FindMyPast.

These would be the searchable records via Ancestry

Have you tried a search on the FIBIS database?
FIBIS = Families In British India Society (www.fibis.org)

Many of their records are available without registering.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thank you. Yes, I am a member of FIBIS, and I am aware that there is information on A******y, and probably on other sites, but the question was specifically to how to exclude the Indiana results from a search for India on FindMyPast because I was fed up having to read down pages of irrelevant items from the USA. I am afraid that it had not occurred to me that 'Overseas/Unknown' would include records from known places!
