Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment
« on: Friday 06 October 17 19:30 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have come across an entry on Ancestry for a Daniel Bullen in the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment.  The document is badly damaged, but  according to the transcription he was Born Stow Maries, Norfolk.  However, it is difficult to read and I can only see "Stow" and Norfolk.  As Stow Maries is in Essex I am assuming this is a transcription error and it may be "Stow Bedon".  The transcription also says he was born 1862, although again it is difficult to read.  The only thing that is certain is his name, regiment and regiment number which is 2305.

Does anyone know of any other record for that regiment and regiment number in the name of Bullen.

Thanks Mo

For the record, the title of the regiment was 'The York and Lancaster Regiment' - no counties involved!

Thanks KGarrad for your prompt response.  Unfortunately, I didn't make my post very clear.  I do apologise.  I was looking for any other "Forces" records.  I am sorry to have wasted your time.  :-[

Thanks Ainslie for the info.

The only records for him will be service &/or pension. You've seen his service record such as it is & there's very little there.
You may know that he signed up for 12 years meaning he did 6 under the Colours & 6 on reserve.
At some point he was posted but no date is given. Home postings weren't recorded on service records so went overseas at some point. Whether recalled & posted to S.Africa is unclear.
All a bit vague I know but just trying to glean something from what there is.

Thanks Jim1

It was certainly more than I gleaned from it.

Many thanks again.

Hi Jim

I think I may have found him (although the information is very vague - Pvt D Bullen with no date of birth or exact death - and I may be grabbing at straws) but I found a record on Findagrave in the Maitland Cemetery in South Africia.

It says he died between 1872 and 1899 in Cape Town.  Do you have any idea why the York and Lancaster Regiment were in Cape Town at that time.  I have looked on Google, but it only mentions the Second Boer War which was after 1899.

It's quite possible he died in S. Africa as the Regt. were there at the time. The Boer War was 1899-02.
I don't know how many D. Bullens were in the Yorks & Lancs. but I would suggest it's most probably him.
They first saw action in 1900 where they lost 10 men.
