Maria Julia Williams - West Ham
« on: Saturday 07 October 17 09:30 BST (UK) »
I've been trying to find out what happened to Maria Julia Williams.  The last known place she lived in was West Ham in 1881 when she was nine years old.
Maria Julia was the daughter of John Andrew Williams 1841 - 1910 and Jane Gill 1854 - 1876.  She was born in Carlisle in the last quarter of 1871 and she was brought up by her mother's sister Emma after her mother died.  Emma married John Williams in 1877.  I can't find any record of Maria's marriage or death and would love to know what became of her.

In the 1881 census I see John A Williams was born in Ireland. Have you checked there at all.

Also you mentioned that her mother's sister (Emma) married a John Williams, is he the same man?
Have you been able to track Maria's brother who is listed in the same census?

John is listed as a "Marine Engineer (Seaman) this could imply distant ports/lands or even emigration.

An 1891 census shows the family but no Maria is listed (guess you already have that)

Yes, it's the same John Williams.  He was my great grandfather.  The marriage between John and Emma was illegal as a man couldn't marry his late wife's sister in those times.  John and Emma had several children one of whom was my grandfather.  By 1891 the family had moved to Great Yarmouth and Maria was no longer living with them.  My mother told me that John was mayor of Great Yarmouth but I've never found out if this is true.  Maria's mother actually died in Plaistow and John and Emma subsequently moved to West Ham with Maria.
I do hope it wasn't our Maria who was carnally known to Henry Hunt but it could have been.

Even if that story is her you still should be able to track her somewhere ( unless she died, but then the death cert should be findable)

I seem to have come up against a brick wall.  I can't find any record of her death.  She may have married and I would have no idea of her married name.  She may have been sent abroad although I can't think where or she may have been sent back to her father's family in Ireland.  They were all barristers in Dublin apart from one who was a surgeon.

I can't find anyone with these names in the family tree but it is a possibility.  John Williams was a ship's engineer and his sister was a stewardess.  I wondered if Maria might have taken to the sea as well.  I follow this up and see if I can find anything else.
