Help with Dad's Service please (especially in India)
« on: Saturday 07 October 17 18:00 BST (UK) »
I've just received a photo copy of my dad's service record and would appreciate advice on his service and especially when in India.  I don't currently have access to a scanner but what I have is:

Thomas Joseph (Joe) Carson
b. 12 Sept 1925 (although on his record it has 9 Dec 1925!!) - St Helens, Lancashire
d. 2 Aug 1985

Documents show:
Service number 14984910
AFB 200d stamped 2 Sept 1944 (written date illegible)
Q6. about previous service he has put 'RM' (Royal Marines?) and there is a note of 'Former Service' from 3 Jul - 11 Sept 1944 in 'RN'.  He would have been 18.  Would this have been at his local drill hall?

12 Sept 44
The Royal Welsh Fusiliers
9 Dec 44
Transferred to R Sigs

Service shows as:
12 Sept 44 - 13th Bn
28 Dec 44 - Catterick Depot Bn
(line underneath) 10T Bn
3 Jul 45 - 48 Div Sigs
6 Sep 45 - 47 Inf Res Div Sigs
3 Oct 45 - RMGGK
3 Oct 45 - Embarked for India
Disembarked Bombay
23 Oct 45 - XIV A List
19 Nov 45 - Assam & East Bengal Sigs
13 ? 45 - HQ East Comm Sigs
22 Dec 45 - XII List
2 Jan 46 - Q L of C (?) Signals
Bengal & Assam Sigs
19 Apr 47 - 73 Brit Indep Inf Bde
17 Nov 47 - Disembarked UK
16 Nov 47 - 6 Feb 48 Home
6 Feb 48 Released to reserve (eligible for recall until age 45)

I remember dad mention that when travelling on a train in India, he woke up to find someone taking wax from his ear!!

Find it fascinating that I also was in the Signals (but at the time didn't know my dad had been) and one of the 2 places I've visited in India recently for work has been Mumbai (Bombay).

Very much appreciate any insight you may be able to provide.
