Walter Grove & Tom Grove Hull
« on: Saturday 07 October 17 19:04 BST (UK) »
I have been told, Walter Grove Hull born 1890 was an officer in the Royal Artillery, at one point 90% of his battery was wiped out by the Huns, he was promoted rather quickly and finished up with the field rank of Lt, colonel (Major effective) and was awarded the Military Cross.
I have checked the army list and this is correct, the "90% of his battery was wiped out by the Huns" seems to be circa 1917/18. I only know he was in the RA, not which Battalion, is there anyway of expanding on this?

Tom Grove Hull born 1858 (Walters Father) joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) as a commander or Lt. commander in charge of designing and overseeing the production of nautical and other instruments for the Royal Navy and the Royal Flying Corps, he was a jeweler in civvy street. However, in the London Gazette he is shown as an airforce major, why?

the Royal Naval air Service was one of the units which merged to form the RAF in 1918 - Tom is on navy lists prior to that date, so presumably moved from the RNVR to the RNAS (as per National Archives) and on to the RAF by the time of his gazetting

The use of the word "Huns" to describe Germans should really be avoided?
It is a derogatory term, similar to "Krauts" or "The Bosch". It's simply not very nice? :-\

You will need to apply for Walter Grove Hull's record.  Royal Artillery officers tended not to stay with the same battery throughout the war and none of the online records show any batteries for him.  From this one could trawl war diaries for evidence of a battery being destroyed.

From 1 April 1918 until August 1919, Air Force ranks (and Tom was RAF from 1 Apr 1918) were the same as army ranks.  His LG entries are in that period.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
