Corn Meter Ancestor Westminster from 1790s onwards
« on: Saturday 07 October 17 20:36 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find out about my 4 X Great Grandfather who worked as a Corn Meter when he died. He lived in Westminster and before that Hackney and I am trying to find out where I can find records of this occupation. I don't know when he was born but sometime around 1740's to 50's since his wife was born in 1751. I know from her death record in 1841, that her husband was a Corn Meter when he died. I know there are some records of Corn Meters around the London Docks but would all Corn Meters worked there? I am not aware of any docks around Westminster around the 1790s to 1830s and I have not found any exchanges in Westminster at that time either. Are all references to Corn Meter in the Guildhall. I have tried Westminster Archives but they have not been able to help and I don't know who has Hackney Archives. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me to understand more of my Ancestor and his job.

Hi Brybo1A

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Hackney Archives can be found here

https://www.hackney.gov.uk/archives

Have you tried the London Metropolitan Archives?

https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/london-metropolitan-archives/visitor-information/Pages/enquiry-service.aspx

A lot of the records deposited at the Guildhall have been moved to the LMA for safe-keeping.
