Trish

Thank you so much for all your help so far.

You are spot on with the illegitimate Grace - I've just downloaded her birth cert and its the correct family. She was born at 89 Townhead Street Hamilton and I know her grandparents lived at 86 Townhead Street - Also Catherine Helens mother signs the birth cert. So thank you so much for that find.

The marriage to Law I'm less sure about as the only marriage I can find on scotlands people has Ellen with the wrong parents

I've just downloaded the death of Ellen Law 1876, Hamilton.

It is her!!

Whaat is strange is that on her marriage cert her parents are listed as John Waterston and Jane Waterston ms Haddow

On her death cert its listed as John Waterston and Catherine Waterston ms Haddow

and yet her parents were Alexander Waterston and Catherine Waterston ms Haddow

I'm now wondering if the father had a middle name John and was called John and that's why his son-in law had this written on certificated even although his legal forst name was Alexander

I guess it would be interesting to find Alexander Waterston's death certificate to check this out but I have been unable to find this on Scotland's People

Thanks again everyone who has been involved - I needed real experts and it looks like I have them!! x

Ellen's parentage is a conundrum  ???

Not often the marriage info. is incorrect, deaths yes (expected).

You need to check the info. on the siblings marriages.

Looks as though Alexander stuck with Alexander  :-\

Was he Alexander on the marriage, Catherine's death, other children's info?

"Catherine Haddow (1811 - 1869) married Alexander Waterston (1816 - 1862) in Hamilton , Lanarkshire on 15th Oct 1837

The Census's are confusing as it looks like Alexander perhaps lived apart form his wife and family.

They are together in 1841 Census with fist daughter Jane. Catherine is incorrectly listed as Ketran. They are living Union Street, Hamilton. Ive been told of 4 other kids being born and the census's back most of this up

William circa 1842
Helen/Ellen circa 1844
Mary circa 1845
John 1847"

Actually, I forgot about the 'living apart' i.e. is it likely Catherine did have children with John (possibly a brother)  :-\

Who were the witnesses to their marriage?

What year was Jane born?

There's no Bent Cemetery burial record for Alexander Waterston based on the information that he died in 1862 in Hamilton.

However, there's a death on SP for Alexander Waterston, 1885, Greenock, 564/1 270. Have you had a look at that certificate? The age is right.

There's an 1881 census record for an Alexander Watterstone (sic), age 66, born about 1815 in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Father-in-Law, Shipyard Labourer. He is living in the Easton household (Archibald Easton Head, spouse Jane Watterstone). The address is 64 Dumfrochar Rd, Greenock. Also living there are James Watterstone (sic), age 24, and Alexander Watterstone, age 14.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Good finds Rodeo  ;) & looks to be the correct death according to...

"Alexander Waterston, father of Mary died at 58 Lynedoch Street, Greenock in August 1885" (Greenock Telegraph)

Sadly this Alexander from Greenock isn't the right one. Ive looked it up and hes staying in the house in Greenock as he is the father in law to the head of the house Archibald Easton. Now while Archibalds wife is called Jane Watterston she is not the correct one. Her parents on her marriage certificate are listed as Alexander Watterston and Mary Riddell

Another dead end. And I still cant find Grace or Mary
