Richorde name
« on: Sunday 08 October 17 11:36 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. Just a quick question. I have an ancestor named Richorde Ferris who married William Tozer in Plymouth or West Devon,1780. Have any of you come across the name Richorde before? I can't find any baptismal or birth record of her, and was wondering if it is perhaps a misspelling of a more common name. I was also wondering if perhaps they have Huguenot roots, Richorde sounding rather French. Needless to say, any other information you have on Ferris's/Tozers in this area would also be much appreciated.

Best wishes
Samuel

Can't help with the birth of Richorde but she's not the only one with that name. Whilst searching I came across a marriage in 1612 in Ashprington for a Richorde Ferris to a Roberte Bunker.

Also Richorde married William Tozer 21 April 1780 in Harford.

Hi
The marriage is at Harford Devon 21.4.1780 by banns
William Tozer husbandman and Richord Ferris both sojourners to parish.
Both made a cross
wit John Luscombe and F Crispin who signed.

It's quite a way from Plymouth.
They daughter Elizabeth is baptised  there 2.1.1791 and her mother is Richord.
There's also William 24.6.1781,Richard 14.1.1787  and Grace 14.7.1793.

Other Tozer couples at the Time are Richard and Amy Seccombe married 31.12.1785 , and Walter and Jane Prouse married Ermington 19.5.1766.

There's a Mary Ferris daughter of Eliza Beer  of Ermington baptised at Harford 2.2.1755
Mary Ferris buried 4.8.1754
Robert Ferris /Fexris otp married Sarah Lang pf Ermington 2.1.1761 (both signed, witnesses William Willis and John Smith),and Sarah buried 28.4.1775
He is buried 8.4.1789.
There are no Ferris or Tozers baptised in the parish 1750-1772 except for the Mary I've already mentioned.
It's possible the Ferris family were non conformists and took their children elsewhere.

I have a Richorde, baptised at Brixham St Mary's, (Devon,) 1604.
Initially I assumed this was a variation of Richard, but then I found a marriage to William Champion, so I knew it was a female version of Richard.
There was an Ann baptised at the same time, (so perhaps they may have been twins,) and they were the daughters of Thomas and Mary Wyatt.
There was a son named Richard baptised in 1605.

Thank you all very much for your replies and information. I will pick up the non-conformist possibility and have a look in the area around it.
