« on: Sunday 08 October 17 20:59 BST (UK) »
Hi - looking for any information on the McBay butcher family from Johnshaven - my grandfather was Edward McBay (master butcher) and my father (also Edward and butcher). My father passed away aged 52 (1990). Don't  have much more information on my family tree also. X

Welcome to Rootschat

I have asked the moderator to move your post to the Kincardineshire board

Re: your grandfather - when was he born and when did he die?

If he is the Edward McBay who died in 1980 aged 80 - his mothers maiden name was Cuggie

I suspect your father was born in 1938 Kincardineshire per Scotlands People.  His death reg shows your grandmothers maiden name was Blues

Edward McBay married Martha Blues in 1933 Benholm as per SP

A Martha Mackie Blues was born 1913 Benholm - see SP

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/search-our-records

A Martha Ritchie McBay b 1914 died 2005 Edinburgh but SP shows a birth for a Martha Ritchie Blues in 1884 Benholm

Your fathers death was registered Inverbervie which is Kincardineshire - not Aberdeen

From Carole's info, possible marriage for parents:

James McBay and Isabella Criggie married in Bervie or Inverbervie district in 1898.

Likely 1901 entry for the family. Everyone showing as born in Bervie except James McBay:

James Mcbay 28 fisherman b. Benholm, Kincardine
Isabella Mcbay 24
Isabella Mcbay 2
Edward Mcbay 8 months

Address: Queen Street, Bervie

Good for you to be able to check key details on your direct line. I think you will find the McBays from these areas are well researched and lots of details available online. For this reason, you need to check on Scotlands People and get the key names/dates to help you work back with confidence. There are a numer of researchers here on RootsChat with an interest in McBay from these areas and period, see:

www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=404371.0
