Marriage licence 1845 in County Down.
« on: Sunday 08 October 17 22:51 BST (UK) »
Anybody know where  I go to find a copy of a marriage licence in County Down?
I have a copy of the marriage of Samuel Mcbride and Eliza Thompson 3 Sept 1845 at the First Presbyterian church Saintfield, County Down, which says it is ‘by licence’.
Just wondering if it would give me any more information like their ages. The marriage certifiacte just says ‘of full age’.
Or are they one of the series of documents that don’t survive?
Many thanks

Yes thanks Sam - I have all that.
Just wondered what had happened to 'the licence'.
I know in England many Record Offices have the bonds and/or allegations made when the licence was applied for - and many are now on findmypast or ancestry. They often give more information.
Not sure about in Ireland though.

Thanks for the links hallmark.
Good to know there are indexes at least, and where they are - even if my Samuel is not on them! :(

This was a Presbyterian marriage and I don't think any of their licenses were retained centrally, in the way that Church of Ireland & Church of England licenses were. Incidentally, Presbyterians in Ireland don't use banns. All their marriages used to be by licence or special licence.
