I am still not sure if the 1849 arrival I posted is for our OPs family, different parents named for the 10 year old lad.

NSW ER 1870 GOULBURN
Richard SLATER, householder of Towrang.
NO OTHERS of that surname on that electoral roll.

NSW ER1878 GOULBURN
Richard SLATER, household, Mundy street
John Thornton SLATER, household, Verner Street
James SLATER, household, Lithgow Street

If this is the correct family, Mary Ann died 23 Mar 1856. Death notice here:

This William Henry SLATER, tinsmith died in 1865 - late of Botany St Waterloo (and son of John in BDM index). See http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/13114682

There were children born to a William H and Sarah in the 1860s. However his death notice states he was aged 48 years, and the father of W. J. Slater, of Market-street. See http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/13114857
