1881 Census COHEN Family. Hiding somewhere in Middlesex.
« on: Monday 09 October 17 08:02 BST (UK) »
Have found this family on 1841-51-61 & 1871, but am having difficulty finding them on the 1881 census.
On 1871 at 52 Grosvenor Rd, Islington. COHEN Barnett 54 Furniture Dealer, Sarah as Samuel 56, children Michael 21, Abraham 20, Esther 18. Julia 17, Annie 15.
Barnett died 1884 and Sarah 1888.
There is a Barnett Solomon COHEN also married to a Sarah, but a different family.
Your help would be appreciated to track them down.
Thank you
Heather R.

Pauline, Thank you. These are the records and addresses I have so far.
1841 Gloucester Terrace, 1851 Christ Church Tower Hamlets 29 Sandys Row, 1861 St Botolph Without Bishopsgate, 5 Sun? St, 1871 Islington, 52 Grosvenor Road. (Off A**try.)
But no luck with 1881 there or on familysearch so far.
Ages 1841 20/25, 1851 34/36, 1861 43/45, 1871 54/56. so pretty consistent.
Cheers

If you can't find the parents, then look for the kids...

Barnett's probate record shows his address at death (18 October 1884) as 27 Tavistock Square, Bloomsbury.

Have you searched for that address in 1881?

Following up on this: unfortunately they are not at 27 Tavistock Square in 1881, when it is occupied by Joseph R. Postlethwaite, a 36-yr-old solicitor born in Hastings, and his household.

Hi

1881 There is a family . . . . .
19 Sandys Row Spitalfields
RG11 437 92 p17&18

which includes . . . . .
Sarah Cohen 57 (although marked as widowed)
Rebecca 32 (Esther?)
Annie 26

Is Sarah 's maiden name HYMAN, variously (mis-)spelled as HYMAM / HYMEN ?
"The wise man knows how little he knows, the foolish man does not". My Grandfather & Father.

"You can’t give kindness away.  It keeps coming back". Mark Twain (?).

This looks likely to be what is left of the family of Arron & Sarah Cohen who were at 16 Sandy's Row, Spitalfields in 1871: RG10/503/27/12.  Their children in 1871 included a Rebecca 23 and a Nancy 16, who may be the same person as Annie listed in 1881.

Ray & avm228,
Thank you but, yes, it is not the Sarah I am looking for. Maybe they were out of the country in 1881!
Ray,
Yes, her maiden name was HYMAN and have found her marriage to Barnet COHEN in 1839, ordered the GRO Cert (which will arrive sometime in the next two weeks to NZ).  It is the HYMAN family I have been hunting for and on the record her father is recorded as Mordecai, so she could be a sibling of my GG Grandmother Rebecca. On the 1841 census Sarah's brother Samuel age 20 was with the family, could be two siblings at once.
PaulineJ,
Have had a quick search for the children, but will try again over the weekend and attempt to sort out the correct ones and follow on with them.
