James Stewart Gellatly born Arbroath c.1840
« on: Monday 09 October 17 15:18 BST (UK) »
I am having trouble finding my great-great-grandfather who was a MARINER RNR & later a FRENCH DYER in Perth. Wondering if anybody could shed any light on his origins or his father (unknown) or mother, Lily Kirk, who also appears to be a mystery?

He was married 1869 to a Margaret Burden. When married to Margaret they lived at Exchange Street, Dundee, or maybe his parents did. The marriage took place at the General Prison, Perth!

James Gellatly and his mother Lily Kirk on the 1851 census living at South Street, St Andrews, Fife.  It states James is 11 and born in Arbroath and he is with his mother Lilly Kirk aged 52 born in St Andrews Fife listed as a pauper.
1871 census lived at 64 South Street, Perth & born St. Andrews, Fife.
1881 census lived at 137 High Street, Perth St Pauls, Perthshire.
1891 census lived at 11 Tulloch Terrace, Perth
1901 census lived at Hillyland, Tibbermore.

James died in 1923 of cardiac failure while living at 11 Tulloch Terrace, Hillyland, Perth.

Presume no father is named on either his marriage or death cert?

Have you checked for a baptism on Family Search or birth in the Old Parish Records on Scotland’s People ?

Some info on an earlier thread, re father:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=523008.0

Quote
also mentions the usual place of residence as Exchange Street, Dundee but this may be for his parents on the certificate?
James' parents shown as John Gellatly (mason) and Lily Gellatly (maiden name Kirk) both deceased at the time of James' marriage.

Did you follow up the named father, John Gellatly, Michael?

Hi Gadget,

Sorry - Yes, I did try to but didn't get very far.
https://www.deceasedonline.com/servlet/GSDOSearch says a John Gellatly buried Brechin, Angus 24th December 1860.

Unlikely it is the following one as my man was born 1842.
http://www.fdca.org.uk/HowffG02.pdf
Also a John Gellatly, shipmaster, buried 19th October 1839 at New Howff cemetery, Dundee, aged 37, decease of heart. Son of the late Captain John Gellatly. Married to Amelia Wallace. Copy of will from Paisley courts dated 13/1/1840..

I see that the 1851, found by ails81 ( http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=523008.msg3802797#msg3802797  ) shows Lily as unmarried.  Will have a look for them with the earleir info but father's name might be guesswork  :-\

A couple of possible Johns who were masons on the 1851:

Paul Street, Perth
John Galletly, married, 69, mason, b. Perthshire

Scone, Perthshire
John Galletly, unm, 63, stone mason (journeyman), b, Scone

also a James:
High Street, Perth
James Galletly, mar, 54, mason, no birthplace given on transcription

It might be worth following these up - they may not be James’s father but worth a try. Note the spelling of the surname  on the transcriptions. Also, all Perthshire !

High Street, Perth
James Galletly, mar, 54, mason, no birthplace given on transcription

High Street runs parallel with South Street (heading south) towards the 'South Inch'
Perth Prison sits at the South end on the left side of the road across from the 'Inch' on Edinburgh Road.

I'm just wondering when the name James Stewart Gellatly becomes noticeable as it's not prominent in the previous listings on census'?

I'm not being facetious but it may be a clue to something?

Annie

Edit....I can't draw a map but best I can on here  :P

Lily's age in 1851 is indexed as 52, which means that she had James when she was about 40. This seems pretty old to be having an illegitimate child. Have you checked the original census? Is there any possibility that her age is wrong?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I wondered about that, Annie, so had a look. I found a possible Stewart Gellatly but he wasn't a mason or anything to do with building. My computer then had a little problem and have only managed to get back on after a  big repair and restore. Will try to retrace my steps  :-\

It's worth reading the other thread that I linked to as there may be clues there:
