Annie ~

I think the James you've found on the 1841 was son of an Alexander and Jean Kirk - maybe follow them up.

Sorry Gadget... ;D  ;D Crossed posts  ::)

I know it's not too old in terms but...

'Unmarried' i.e. not a 'Widow' so yes it's a bit odd/old  ;D  :-\

Yes, I actually already have George Kirk & Marion Phinn. George was born Edinburgh and married Edinburgh also.
Something took him to St. Andrews where Lilly was born and it probably was not for golf!

 ;D

How can you be sure of Lilly/Lily being their daughter if you can't find a Baptism/Marriage/Death for her  ???

(Annie ~ not sure why you suggest that  a widow might be more likely to have a child in her 40s than a single woman  :-\  )

I think what people are meaning is that illegitimate births tended to happen more in the younger age bracket of late teens/early 20s. As a woman gets older she's more likely to be married. Some women never married of course.

It's not impossible of course, one of my ancestors was having multiple illegitimate children right up till her late 30s and then got married. I think they are just wanting OP to explore more avenues first.

Hi Annie,

Nope - struggling to find her in 1841. Searched combinations Lily/Lillias with surnames Kirk/Gellatly with & without John Gellatly.

Same with James Gellatly. Searched births and nothing.

If, during the 1851 census, James' mum Lilly had been married to John and John was dead at this time would she show her maiden name? Odd how she has her maiden name on the census?

I am not 100% sure about Lillies parents - when I mentioned I have George Kirk already it is just as a point to research not confirmed. Sorry for the confusion.

Random thought. Could Lilly be James' granny? Could she have been looking after him? Unlikely as she was a pauper - right?

Perhaps, unless James' parents died (specifically the mother in those times) and there was no one else?

EDIT;

OR, she wasn't a pauper at the time of initially looking after him?

I wondered that, Michael, Also, thought she might be an aunt,  which was why I looked up any siblings for her - see my earlier post.
