From the above...

"Many years ago my mother mentioned something about my great grandfather Gellatly being a whaler sailing from Dundee and Gellatly Street in Dundee was named after him. I do doubt the facts behind the street name though"

This may help...

"1801 The Advertiser published by Dr James Stewart. Gellatly Street, originally called
Stewart’s Court, was removed to make way for the new Gellatly Street. Dr Stewart was the
son of James Stewart, merchant, and was born in 1740. He died on 2nd May"

Hi Gadget, I appreciate your time and info.

I'll need to do some cross-checking research more on James Gellatly. The first mention of middle name Stewart is actually on his death certificate, by his son. Prior to that on James' son Frederick's marriage certificate is mentions James KIRK Gellatly, with KIRK being his mother's surname. So until I can find James' birth certificate I don't know if he is middle name Stewart or Kirk.

Also, 1851 census says 11yr's old born Arbroath but later census reports state born St. Andrews.

I need to dedicate more time to solve this one.
Thank you once again!
Michael

Lily's age in 1851 is indexed as 52, which means that she had James when she was about 40. This seems pretty old to be having an illegitimate child. Have you checked the original census? Is there any possibility that her age is wrong?

It is a bit old so I checked and the transcription is correct. I've attached a snip

Something just doesn't seem right  :-\

As Forfarian said, age is a question for having an illegitimate child.

Have you found Lily/Lilly in 1841 with or without James?

Yes, I actually already have George Kirk & Marion Phinn. George was born Edinburgh and married Edinburgh also.
Something took him to St. Andrews where Lilly was born and it probably was not for golf!

41 is  not too old to have children. My 3 x great granny had her last child in her early 40s in 1833. Alternatively, Lilly could be disguising her relationship to James.

Michael - did you follow up George and Mary for possible other children? It might give other leads.
