More 1939 Register advice
« on: Monday 09 October 17 16:41 BST (UK) »
I think I've read as much as possible on the 1939 Register including the excellent blog on the Lost Cousins site, I've also come across many good posts and replies on here as well. However I haven't been able to find anything regarding an entry I've come across in my research. It has all the regular information then added in green ink it has the persons second name and then above the dob columns it has YN 29-12-56. Does anyone know what the YN might stand for?

Kind Regards, Mark.

Could it be a Yorkshire reference  :-\

Was she born with the second name Maria or has it been added later

She was born with the second name of Maria, could it be that she started using Maria as her first name for what ever reason that date signifies. There is a mystery involved as in 1956 her eldest daughter got married and according to the family (I'm doing this for a friend, so not totally sure of the details) she disappeared just after the wedding, never to be by the family again. The family are all Yorkshire based.

Usually those dates marked in are the 'approx' marriage dates particularly if you see a name change denoted.   If you went and looked for a marriage around this year you should be lucky.  Alternatively (no surname change) it may just be NHS coding.  The 1939 Register formed the basis for the NHS and there are all sorts of weird and wonderful marks to be found!

She was already married, had been for 30 odd years. Just hoping that this might be a clue as to where she went and what happened to her.

As the register was used by the NHS in 1956 and updated by them it appears to indicate she sought medical treatment around that time .  If it had been that she had 'remarried' the surname would have changed unless of course she 'married' someone with the same surname.

The number could be a National Insurance number.  They began with 2 letters and then 6 numbers.
I think at that time they weren't issued until someone started work.  If Maria had not worked before she married she may not have had a number and then applied for one when she left home.  I think part of the contributions went to the Health Service.
I am sure someone else reading this will be more of an expert in this.

Is her daughter who married in 56 on that page?

I saw someone the other day whose name was Dorothy with a date of marriage against her name, which in fact related to her daughter Doris, who was on the next line!

To err is human, and all that  ;D
