Mary Browne of Charing
« on: Tuesday 10 October 17 11:41 BST (UK) »
Is anyone able to check for a christening in Charing or the nearby parishes between 1652 and 1668?

My ancestor Robert Rayner married Mary Browne by licence in 1672. The licence is dated 23 Dec 1672 and states that Mary was a spinster, of Charing, and gives her age as 18. From this I think she was probably born c1654 but she may have been a year or so younger/older.

Her father is described as dead and her mother is referred to as Margaret Chapman so it looks like Margaret remarried. The Bondsman was Thomas Chapman of Charing, who could be a relative. If anyone is able to confirm Margaret Rayner's marriage to Mr Chapman that will help as well.

Many thanks for any ideas

Matt

Just one to keep in mind;

Marriage;
9 July 1663, Saint Bride Fleet St , London, London, England
Margrit BROWNE to George CHAPMAN
This image is on Anc. Its does not say if Margrit was Widowed but then no entries on the page have marital status of the couples.

Also a lot of christening entries c 1654 will only have Fathers christian name and Mother not mentioned.

Hi Trish

Thanks for that,  it's certainly an interesting possibility. So far I haven't found any sign of Mary Browne's christening in Charing myself, or a marriage of her mother to a Mr Chapman (possibly Thomas).

There is a Thomas Chapman of Charing, innholder, who left a Will and this could be the Bondsman but I am not 100% sure yet. I have a copy of this Will and in it Thomas refers to his wife "Frances" so this is obviously not Margaret's husband (i.e Mary Browne's stepfather), however he might be a half brother or other relative.

I'll have a look into this marriage later to see if I can find any possible links.

Many thanks again

Matt
