CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO FIND INFORMATION ON MY GRANDFATHER JOHN SINGLETON ?He was born 1898, in 1917 when he was 19yrs old he was living at Portobella Barracks as a soldier. His Father was Benjamin Singleton. John was married to Sarah Kelly who lived at 118 Francis Street Dublin. I would love any information on John and even more information on Benjamin, who was he married to, how many siblings etc. John was a soldier in the Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1917 when he would have been 19 yrs old. Is there an Irish military site that can perhaps hold the answers and also a site where Benjamins marriage/ birth certificate can be found?[/b]

An Irish military site would not help, before 1921 and independence Ireland was part of the UK so we would be looking for British army records.

A first look at on line records doesn't find a John Singleton of the Royal Irish Fusiliers.  Lack of a medal card may mean he didn't serve overseas and his service record may have been among the 70% or so that were destroyed by bombing in the second war.

The Irish census 1901 has this family with Benjamin and son John:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kildare/Kildare/Church_Lane/1440755/

This appears to be the only Benjamin in the census so may be yours and the birth date for John is 1898/9.

Irish records would seem to be your best bet for certificates.

Benjamin and Kate married in 1883,

Benjamin was something in the Northampton Reg, one of our military experts will no doubt be able to make sense of that.
Fathers Robert Singleton, Clerk and John Doyle, Gardener.

I think Benjamin might have been telling fibs about his age.
His marriage gives his name as Benjamin Robert there is a baptism of a Benjamin Robert COI in Dublin 1846, father is listed as Gentleman but on later baptisms to the same couple the father is Clerk
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kva/

The marriage on that link for Flora Singleton give the father's occupation as Clerk in Bank of Ireland.

Looks like Robert died 1887

Thanks to everyone for their great input to my query. I would still like more information on my paternal grandfather John Singleton, married Sarah Kelly on 1st March 1917 St Michael and John church. They had children Anne, Mary, Ned, John, Esther and Kate. The only birthdate I have is for my dad John Patrick Singleton born March 1920 married my Mum Catherine Mary Phelan, born Oct 31st 1922. Can anyone help with this? thanks    Redsa

You can look here for the children's births in the index but as they are less than 100 years you won't get images of their Certs.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347?collectionNameFilter=false

If they married in Ireland before 1940 you can look for the marriages here or death Certs if they died in Ireland before 1965
