James Flahavan/Flavin/Morrissey Mystery
« on: Tuesday 10 October 17 13:59 BST (UK) »
James Flahavan born c 1833/34 Carrigeen Old Parish Ring Co Waterford. Parents James Flavin & Catherine Hourigan.  James married Anne Phelan circa 1853 (no record found). They had children in Ireland (have details) before emigrating & living in Iowa USA.
Strangely in Iowa the family name changed to Morrissey??
Have found on census 1885 in Alta Buena Vista Iowa a Morrissey family Family search site could be them only text available. James 52, Anna 51 Patrick 24, Mary 26, Anna B 16, Hannah 13.

I am looking for a record of their immigration & also James returned to Ireland and is on 1911 Census as James Flavin living with a nephew in Reanagullee Ardmore Waterford age 75 & recorded as Single.  Looking for a record of James Return passage to Ireland (dont have year)

The mystery is why all the family surname was changed to Morrissey.  Thanks for any assistance .

Why is it you think the Morrissey family are the same people as the Flahavan family?

Which children were born in Ireland?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

I am helping a friend with this research so I will ask her later which children were born in Ireland.
She told me when the family lived in Iowa their surname had changed from Flavin to Morrissey . Thank you

Here's what I'm seeing based on that 1885 Iowa State Census.

The parents and oldest daughter Mary was born in Ireland according to that census. The other children were born in Iowa.

Scroll about 1/3 down page (or use find for Morrissey)

1885 Census: http://iagenweb.org/buenavista/Census/StateCensusRecords/1885StateCensus/BVCensus1885Alta.html

This is the family in 1880. The last name was mis transcribed.

Thank you RJ137 a wealth of information which is very interesting.

The biography of Patrick where it mentions his father James returning to Ireland after his wifes death (can you see her death?).

Patricks marriage gives his mothers name as Ann Whalen(sometimes this is a variation of name Phelan which she was)

Patricks death gives his mothers name as Anna Flavin.

The big mystery is why James Flavin changed his name to Morrissey do you have any opinion on this scenario?

Can you see any ship record when the family left Ireland for USA and also when James returned to Ireland (no date known) but he is on 1911 census in Ireland as James Flavin a 75 & single which I suppose he was if wife had died. Again grateful thanks for all info. Regards :)
