I wonder if the reason James wasn't listed in that 1900 census with Anna & daughter Mary was that they may have been divorced?

The 1895 census is interesting. Son Patrick was married in 1894 as already noted. In 1895 he and his wife are together as well as what appears to be his mother and sister Mary living with them . The marital status definitly looks like a "D" to me. I don't see James in the 1895 census.

Good point RJ137 i notice ann is recorded as "M" are there any divorce records for Iowa?

Update on initial post.

Children of James Flavin & Ann Phelan (whelan) born in Ireland:
James 1854, Mary 1856, Michael 1857, Patrick 1860, Catherine 1862

Sarah Born Iowa c 1868

Family believed to have immigrated between 1863/1870.

In 1870 Census in Iowa family recorded under surname Morrissey in Hardin County Iowa.
In 1871 family are in Alta Iowa where James is Section Foreman with Railway. There is no record in Iowa after 1885 for James Morrissey after he seemingly abandoned his family at some stage .
