Gottfried HASLEBACKER of Switzerland
« on: Tuesday 10 October 17 16:02 BST (UK) »
Gottfried Haslebacker married Elizabeth Caroline Ellis 1888, Westminster

Gottfried was born circa 1862 in Switzerland, father Johann Haslebacker

Gottfried  was purported to have gone back to Switzerland , I have no idea of the date but it is assumed he died in 1928 in Switzerland

Elizabeth Caroline went on to marry Neils Gregerson in 1914 Marylebone

Any help much appreciated

Could it be that the name was really Haselbäcker?
It sounds more probable, somehow, for Switzerland

Having looked at a German dictionary of surnames, I've decided that Haselbacher is the most likely.  The Haselbach is the stream (beck) with the hazel trees along its bank.

Did they dictate the details to the census enumerator?  Could the enumerator read Gottfried's (or his own) handwriting?  The entries in the census ledgers, and particularly the transcripts made by the Mormons or those Ancestry people, are not authoritative documents!

So if you're trying to trace him in Switzerland you should at least consider the rather more probable original spelling.
Bagwell of Kilmore & Lisronagh, Co. Tipperary;  Beatty from Enniskillen;  Brown from Preston, Lancs.;  Burke of Ballydugan, Co. Galway;  Casement in the IoM and Co. Antrim;  Davison of Knockboy, Broughshane;  Frobisher;  Guillemard;  Harrison in Co. Antrim and Dublin;  Jones around Burton Pedwardine, Lincs.;  Lindesay of Loughry;  Newcomen of Camlagh, Co. Roscommon;  Shield;  Watson from Kidderminster;  Wilkinson from Leeds

Hi

I also think the surname in Switzerland was Haselbacher or Haslebacher.
You need to know his place of birth or place of origin to trace him in Switzerland.

The Swiss Surnames Book doesn't mention the surname Haselbacher.

The surname Haselbach has its origins in Altstätten and Altenrhein in the Canton St. Gallen.
The surname Haslebacher has its origins in Lützelflüh and Sumiswald in the Canton Berne.

The churchbooks of all parishes of the Canton Berne are online:
http://www.query.sta.be.ch/archivplansuche.aspx?ID=37
Lützelflüh 1576-1876
Sumiswald 1555-1875

Thank you for your help

All I know from the English census is that Gottfried originated from Switzerland, I really don't know how he got split up from his wife prior to the 1911 census but by 1914 she married  Neils Gregerson, Elizabeth Caroline, his wife, was my Gt aunt
