Marriage bond 23 Sept 1820 Stone and Hippisley
« on: Tuesday 10 October 17 16:10 BST (UK) »
I wonder whether a knowledgeable person can help me please. Gabriel Stone and Edward Hippisley signed a marriage bond on the 23 September before Gabriel Stone married Eliza Hippisley. They married on the 25 September. Do I take it that Edward was Eliza's Father? There is a baptism for an Eliza Hippisley in the Shepton Mallet area 29 November 1795, Father Edward.

And information would be helpful.
Thanks, Heather

I would think that you are probably correct in your assumption.  Relationships are not indicated on Bonds as a rule, but if one of the parties was under age, then it might be shown.  As both parties were over the age of 21, no consent was required.  The only clue might be that Edward's occupation is shown as Saddler, whilst Gabriel is a Butcher.

Thank you for the reply. I now think I have the wrong baptism but there are several references to Edward Hippisley, sadler in Shepton Mallet. Still wonder why there was a marriage bond as they both appear ti be of age.

Kind regards Heather

Marriage licences were issued for a number of reasons - the couple didn't want to wait for the Banns to be read, they did not want others to know their business, sometimes if the bride and groom were from different parishes that would entail reading of Banns in both parishes.  There are lots of reasons, best known to the parties concerned  ;D
