« on: Tuesday 10 October 17 22:45 BST (UK) »
Looking for any information regarding my gg Grandad Benjamin Singleton born Dublin 1856, Fathers name was Robert, a clerk, born Kildare. Benjamin was a private in the Northampton Regiment. He was married to Kate Doyle, Fathers name was John Doyle, a gardener.Although Benjamin was Irish as far as I am aware he served in the British Army. In the 1901 Census he lived at 3 Church Lane Kildare.  Is there any information on him as regarding his military career etc?        Thanks     Redsa

Service record is also on findmypast. But birth year is given as 1849. Served 18 years...he was indeed in Malta in 1871. Also served in India.

You might wish to comment on the replies on your John Singleton thread which look as if they have lead to this one!

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Interesting, I posted on the other thread Max D is referring to that I thought he could be born 1846.
I guess a link would help.

Others have cited elements of this before here and on the other thread (Sinann and gortonboy)  For completeness:

Benjamin Robert Singleton of St James' parish Dublin, a clerk, enlisted in Dublin in September 1868 in what was then the 48th Regiment of Foot (became Northamptonshire regiment in 1881) giving his age as 19.  He served with them in Malta Oct 68 to Feb 72, India Feb 72 to Nov 80 and then UK (which included Ireland) Nov 80 to Aug 87. Married Kate Doyle from Ballysacks (?) 29 Nov 1883.

Certainly looks as if he fibbed about his age and given that the army only records "apparent" age, it could well have been when he joined up.

Glad you have been able to link yourself with this Redsa.

Married Kate Doyle from Ballysacks (?)

MaxD
St.Paul's Church Ballysax, a COI church not far from the Army base on the Curragh. The base was in Ballysax COI parish. Kate's address on the marriage cert is Kildare so it's possible she was from Kildare town or was at least living there at the time of the marriage. Kildare town is just a short distance from the Army base.
