John Brown Yule Mystery

John Brown Yule (born 2 July 1872, Hamilton, Scotland), emigrated to Canada in 1908. His parents were Peter Yule and Annie Yule (her maiden surname).

I have all his passenger list records and found him in the 1911 Canadian census domiciled as a boarder at 2 Joseph Street, Toronto, Ontario, his occupation cited as plumber and his marital status as single.

The nationality of John Brown Yule is recorded in the 1911 census as Canadian, indicating that he was naturalised prior to 1915, those naturalisation records not being available online.

The only further documentation of him is a 1931 passenger record for his nephew, Peter Yule Paterson, on which he cites his his uncle, John Yule, living in Victoria Ave, Toronto.

Can anyone find him in a 1931 (or subsequent) Toronto directory?

I am unable to find a marriage or death for John Brown Yule in the Ontario records on Ancestry.

I would be exceedingly grateful for any information regarding John Brown Yule, particularly a possible marriage and his date of death in Ontario (or possibly elsewhere in Canada).

There is Canadian WW1 Attestation Papers (1st September 1915) for John Brown Yule - 2 July 1872 born Hamilton Scotland -
Nearest relative was sister Mrs Margaret Patterson 175 Spruce Hill. Lomng Island. New York. John was occupation by trade. Served in 2nd field engineers for 10 weeks.
4 years armouries - 4 years Royal Scots Canadian.

Full digital file should be available eventually September 2017 update said they were up to the surname Robertson - so worth keeping an eye on - they are full of information.

There is also a passenger list of troops returning Liverpool England to Halifax Nova Scotia Canada in 27 March 1919 on the Cedric - John brown Yule 35 Bn - dependant was a brother - returning to residence in Toronto.

Many thanks, Sandra. I have both of those records. My grandfather, my great uncle and my 2nd great uncle, John Brown Yule, all served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I. I'm eagerly awaiting John Brown Yule's service file to be digitised.

Peter Yule Paterson had been in Canada previously - there are attestation papers for Peter born 23 April 1897 Glasgow Scotland. Mother Margert Paterson giving the same long Island NY address. Peter was single. Rigger by trade.

Typed - so posted. Trying to fill the time line in.  The 17 January 1931 document for Peter paterson was a border crossing from Canada to the USA.

Thanks again, Sandra. Yes, Peter Yule Paterson was my great uncle (my grandfather's brother), who served in the CEF. Although Peter Paterson travelled to the US in 1931 to stay with his sister, as that passenger record shows, he eventually returned to Toronto, where he died in 1997 -- weeks short of his 100th birthday!
