I,m looking for the  surname GATER I dont have  a first name but think it's E and not sure where he was born, does any one know if this fairly unusual surname is common to any county in England please which might help me narrow him down, was married  in NEWTON ABBOT   1922 his son was born TOTNES,  1928  His   Wife was born in YEOVIL 1911

There are 768 Gater in the 1881 Census. 316 in Staffordshire, 90 in Surrey, 59 in Middlesex, etc. Woolstanton Poor Law Union has 145, Newcastle under Lyne 67, etc. There are 11 in Newton Abbot
The rest are all over the country.

If he was married in 1922 and his wife born in 1911 then she would have been only 11 years old when they married ???

Did you check freeBMD? There is only one Gater marriage in Newton Abbott in 1922, Ernest J Gater, married Mildred White.

The birth of the son in Totnes can also be found on freeBMD.

Free search of the 1939 has -

Ernest J Gater b. 1887 and Mildred A Gater b. 1897 living in Paignton U.D., Devon
3 more people and 1 closed record.

Could this be the family you are looking for?
