Mary HILL - County Clare to Tasmania
« on: Saturday 14 October 17 08:34 BST (UK) »
Hi RChatters
Hoping that you can give me some feedback on my conclusions:
I recently came across a 2nd Mary HILL arriving into Tasmania from Ireland
She was one of the Scarriff workhouse orphans, on board the Calcutta, from Plymouth to Hobart, arriving on 2 Nov 1851 - see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/emigration/calcutta_1851.htm

I had always assumed that "my" Mary HILL was the one that arrived on the Sir Allan McNab on 1 Feb 1854; here is one of my previous posts  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=539976.0

However, the "Calcutta" Mary was aged 20 (so born ~1831) whereas the "McNab" Mary was aged 18 (born ~1836)
There was a Mary HILL who married Jacob TURNBULL in 1855 (Hobart, RC) aged 19 therefore b. ~1836. They had 4 children, and in some of the registrations she is noted as Mary Margaret, or Margaret.  I think I have found the family in NZ, with Mary dying in 1872 aged 34 (B. ~1838)

The Mary HILL who married James ATKINSON in 1857 (Launceston, RC) gave her age as 25, so b. ~1832; she died in 1899, aged 70, so b. ~1829

So I think that it is more likely that the Mary who married James ATKINSON is the one who arrived in 1851 from Scarriff
any thoughts?
many thanks

Hi there,

I don't know the answer, sorry.   But I have noticed difference between the entries under 'Rank' and perhaps there may be clues there.  If this were NSW then I would comment that  "Free" can of course mean they were once a convict, but are now emancipated or it can mean they "Came Free."

TURNBULL = HILL ….. noting 19 year old Mary HILL has no Rank recorded

https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-16p293j2k  19 Jan 1857
ATKINSON = HILL …. Noting 25 year old Mary HILL has FREE recorded for her rank

The Mary Hill on the Sir Allan McNab has "none" in the section for education (read or write)
https://stors.tas.gov.au/CB7-12-1-1  pg 171-172

The Mary Hill who marries Atkinson in majm's link signs with an x

The other Mary Hill signs her name (an orphan would have had some schooling?)

thanks JM that's an interesting observation - I wonder what the blank infers/

and thanks mathew - I was going to have another look at the shipping record and the page wouldn't load, but you've done it for me!

back to square one I guess  :)

In case you haven't seen this...

MARRIED.
On the 19th instant, by the Rev. Father Lucas, of Launceston, Mr. James Atkinson, late of London, to Miss Mary Hill, eldest daughter of Mr. Thomas Hill, of the county Clare, Ireland
