Name of first witness

Hi

Helping Eileen and can't work out the surname of the first witness (James J?? ?? ??)*  on this 1802 baptism in Dalkeith.  The rest is fairly easy,
Any ideas please?

It looks like Jairdain to me. A basic search at Scotland's People says there are 11 examples in OPRs, but I haven't looked at the details.

If it is this, I would imagine it is a variant of Jardine (over 66,000 at SP), Jerdan (>1000) etc.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Looks like Jairdain to me, agree with arthurk.

I thought it was Jardain but Eileen wasn't sure:

Just noticed that there were a couple of witnesses to Helen's baptism in 1802:

Witnesses - James Jardain  (?Jardine?)  and John Mcpherson

It might be worth checking on them.
