John Jaques/Jeakes
« on: Saturday 14 October 17 10:27 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find a baptism for a John Jaques and 3 siblings with mother Rebecca circa 1744 possibly St Giles Parish Reading?
Or a will of the father as yet unknown giving John Jaques 1/4 of properties in Reading listed below.

Explanation:
John Jaques of Portman Street London Coach-maker went bankrupt 1781.

The Reading Mercury has an auction listed 2 June 1783 edition re John Jaques of London bankruptcy to be held on 18 June 1783- re one forth of cottages on Silver Street and Crown Lane in St Giles Parish Reading.
The widow Rebecca Jaques is entitled to the messuages for her lifetime and if John Jaques survives her he is entitled to one fourth part of the properties.

John Jaques was born about 1744 based on his age of 74 when he died 1818, his mother must be Rebecca and he has at least 3 other siblings, based on the advertisement for the auction.

Thanks in advance

Daughter Elizabeth wife of John Woodward house they live in and stocks(married 31.5.1768 at ST Lawrance Reading).
Daughter Jane Jaques 510
Son Joseph Jaques executor (He seems to take over the business)

Numerous Houses in Reading, 800 in stock lodged at bank of England, mention of a marriages settlement and money in stocks .
It's all very complicated and I'm sure you'd rather look for yourself.

There's an apprenticeship for John Jaques

St Giles, Reading has a few jacques baptisms but none after 1686. There are 4 children baptised to a Roger & Marie Jacques between 1629 and 1641.

There is a burial at St Giles for a John Jacques Nov 21 1785 . All it has against it is a 'P' presumably meaning he was a pauper.

Much more luck with St Laurence, Reading:

Baptisms:-
                 Samuel s/o Joseph & Katherine   16 Oct 1738
                 Elizabeth Jacques d/o Joseph & Katherine  10 Sep 1740
                  Frances d/o Joseph & Rebecca  17 Aug 1743
                  Joseph s/o Joseph & Rebecca 17 Jul 1745
                 John s/o Joseph & Rebecca  28 Nov 1752
                 Jane d/o Joseph & Rebecca  27 Aug 1754

I thought Katherine might have been Joseph's first wife but found this marriage in St Laurence:

14 Apr 1737 Joseph Jaques & Rebecca Collier both of this parish.

I couldn't see a marriage to Katherine so presumably there were 2 Joseph Jacques around at the same time. Helpful!
