John and William Sheldon
« on: Saturday 14 October 17 14:51 BST (UK) »
I need some help in finding more about John Sheldon, shown as unmarried in the 1851 census in Birmingham, lodging with William and Ann Green with a 1 year old "visitor" called William Sheldon. Can anyone find any birth records, death records or other censuses to confirm their identity.

there are several free to use resources.

first the gro birth indexes. (to get mmn)
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

then you should look for the marriage of the widowed john sheldon (freebmd)
and the wife's death.

I don't think he was widowed. I think it is a letter U next to his name for Unmarried. There are two entries on the same page of people who have been widowed and on both occasions the Enumerator writes Widow or Widowr.

either way, finding the birth reg will get you a mmn .

do you track the infant through census?
have you tracked the older sheldon backwards/forwards for siblings?

I am trying to identify the correct John Sheldon through the census records. I have full access to Ancestry and findmypast having difficulty identifying a common thread.
The problem starts with George Sheldon my GG Grandfather who I can accurately trace back to the 1871 census lodging with John Thomas Green and family in Thornaby. George's marriage certificate from 1873 indicates his father as John Sheldon, watchmaker.
George is shown as born in Birmingham but there are no John and George Sheldons living together from Birmingham prior to 1871.
But there is a John Sheldon, painter lodging with a William Green, watch hand maker in Birmingham in 1861. Is it just coincidence that this John Sheldon (possible a watch face painter?) is living with someone called Green and his "son" George is living with someone called Green?

Probably too many assumptions but any help in untying the tangled knot would be appreciated.

What is George's age from his marriage certificate, of from the censuses or death certificate?

Thanks

Added:
After his marriage (and in 1871) censuses show born about 1844, Birmingham?

The John Sheldon from 1851 is age 29, so born about 1821/1822

This would be the wrong birth year, but of interest because of his father's occupation
John Sheldon age 2  born 22nd December 1819 baptised 1st January 1822 at St Philip, Birmingham,  Warwickshire
Father: William Sheldon, Mother: Sarah.
Also baptised at same time Henry Sheldon born 21st May 1821.
All living in Hospital Street.
Father's occupation : Japan Waiter

This is one partial definition:
'JAPANNER   One who applies a hard brilliant coat of any of several varnishes to objects'

There is a William Sheldon (and Sarah) in 1841 census age 45 who is a Japanner, has several children including John 20 and Henry 15 (rounding of ages)

Added:
NO, NOT THEM.

Have found John with his parents in 1851, so not a visitor elsewhere.
