Census - name changes Mattimore
« on: Sunday 15 October 17 15:33 BST (UK) »
I have been doing my family tree for many years but keep going back checking names.  I check between census entries and births/deaths details.  This is a strange one. I have Michael Mattimore in Boothstown Lancashire 1851.  Cannot find the family in 1861 but he died in Oct/Dec 1865 Westleigh. Wife Catherine died 1863.  Now in 1861 I do find a George married to Catherine in Westleigh with children of same name.  There is a death for George and he died in October 1865.  I think this may be the same person.  Also have Timothy Mattimore in 1851 in Boothstown not on any other census year, but there is a family of Edward(Shady) Mattimore all the children have the same names so I am thinking Timothy became Edward.  Does this sound feasible.  I have spent hours on this - there are no deaths for the ones that disappeared and it is very odd that both have children with same names born around same time

What you have not said is ages, birthplaces, how many kids, whether you have checked mmn on the gro indexes...

Why dont you transcribe the census that you are looking at?
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

The ages aren't quite right for George and Catherine to be the same couple are they?

Michael is 33 in 1851 Kitty is 33 children Bridget 10 Margaret 8 Teddy 1

George is 35 in 1861 Catherine is 40 children Mary 8 John 5

if I have the right census none of the children appear twice

Also have Timothy Mattimore in 1851 in Boothstown not on any other census year, but there is a family of Edward(Shady) Mattimore all the children have the same names so I am thinking Timothy became Edward.  Does this sound feasible.

He's down as Teddy on ancestry so that would be fine for Edward.

Who do you have for his wife?

Edward Mattimore marriage 1889 Leigh to Sarah or Frances
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Firstly Millipede thank you.  You are correct that Margaret married James Duddy and her brother and sister lived with her in 1871 and I can see Mary and John on the later censuses.  My problem is 1861 I cant find anything for them but George and Catherine appear with  children John and Mary of the same age.  I have checked the bmd and I can't find two lots of children in Westleigh which is where they lived. I have found the deaths for Michael in 1865 and Catharine 1863 on the bmd.  I did not find and entry on bmd for George but what I did find was an entry for a coal mine death for George in October 1865 (same as Michael). this is why I think Michael and George are the same person.  I realise the ages are different but I have come across this before.  With regard to Timothy, as you have seen from the 1851 census in Boothstown there are many children with the same name and ages as Edward(Shady) in 1861 and 1871 when Timothy has disappeared.  So I think Timothy is Edward and Michael is George and they are brothers.  I have not yet found the marriage of Edward  in 1889 so thanks for that
