Ancestry : linking grand child to grand parent
« on: Sunday 15 October 17 21:53 BST (UK) »
I have found a grand child on census return, but don't yet know their parentage. I'd like to link to the grand parent, but doesn't seem obvious how to do this. I have seen that some people create a "dummy" child and link through them to the grand child. but there must be an easier way ?

thanks in advance if anyone's solved this

Geoff

Hi Geoff

Want to tell us the detail of the child and where you found ?

Doesn't answer the linking question but I would try and find the parentage first then you can link him or her to the correct parent(s)  :)

I don't think any FH software allows you to link a grandchild to a grandparent?
I use Ancestry, RootsMagic and have used Brother's Keeper.
You always need the parents.

So, look up the birth on the GRO Index Search - that will give you the Mother's maiden name.
Then try to find a marriage for the surname to the Maiden name.

I don't think there is anyway either other than to link via parents to grandparents. I have seen trees where a parent is put down as unknown and then that parent is linked to the grandparent.

As Ray said, if you want to give names and details we may be able to help find parents.

Assuming that you are unable to locate information about the parents at the moment, I would create a 'ghost' child of the grandparents and then add the grandchild as a child of the 'ghost' person. If the child's surname on the census is different from the grandparent's it is reasonable to assume the 'ghost' child was a daughter who was married, but if the name is the same it could be either a son or an unmarried daughter. I don't think any software has a means to add a grandchild any other way.

As others say, it would be better to find the grandchild's birth/baptism.

Have you found the child on the following census, are they still with grandparents then? Remember as well the census is just a snapshot if where people were on that night, it doesn’t necessarily mean the child lived with the grandparents.

I had a similar case but I was able to find the birth and so I could work out who she belonged to and realised she was probably with her grandparents as her mother had just had another baby.
