Trouble finding location
« on: Monday 16 October 17 13:48 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone
Hope some of you have better eyesight than me.
I have Thomas Chapman and his family on the 1851census  118/1631/339/31.
He is living at what appears to be Barns Hill Staple. He died in 1855 and I have just got his PDF death cert. the address is hard to read but it looks like it is the same Barnshill. No number of the house given. The same is written on his wife’s death cert as well.
I can’t find this location anywhere near Staple Kent and wondered if someone has better local knowledge than I have.
Thanks in advance.

Try Barnsole, Staple ;D
See: http://www.staple-online.com/

Where it says:
Staple parish comprises the village itself, the hamlet of Barnsole, part of the hamlet of Summerfield and the hamlet of Shatterling.

If you Google Barnshill there are quite a few entries mentioning Census  and places of birth as Barnshill. I think that if you say Barnshole quickly enough it sounds like Barnshill and people write what they hear.

Barnshill Staple.  There is a village in Kent called Staple, and somewhere called Barnsole adjacent.

An ag. lab's family would probably have mumbled the word? Pronouncing it more like Barn zll.
The Registrar, being an educated man, would write down what he thought he heard?
So he wrote Barnes Hill ::)

I have no doubt in my mind that Barnsole was what was said ;D

Thanks everyone for your input. I agree that Barnsole is the most likely candidate as the census return has pages of people living along this location. Its just puzzling that both the enumerator and the registrar spelt it the same way and the  both Thomas and his wife who died in 1858 have the same location. I think I will put this one on the back burner for the moment.
Thanks for the input

Off topic I know, but haven't seen this COD before; wonder if Thomas had an agricultural accident or bite leading to the infection...
