How do I obtain a copy of a will?
« on: Monday 16 October 17 15:42 BST (UK) »
I've found a will listed in "WILLS IN THE YORK REGISTRY A.D. I568 TO I585" but I don't know how to go about obtaining a copy of the will or reading the will online.  Can anyone help please?

My first instinct is that the wills are held at The Borthwick Institute in York.   e-mail:  borthwick-institute at york.ac.uk (substitute @ for at and remove the spaces).  The staff are very helpful.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

No problem!  However, I believe you will have to purchase the will, as Yorkshire wills are not, I believe, on-line.  If they were, I might be downloading a lot  :o :o :o

I don't mind paying for it as long as it's not too expensive.  These documents can solve mysteries if you're lucky.
