Hi Jen
English marriage certificates have never named both parents.  After mid 1837 they should give fathers details.  Witnesses can sometimes be parents but would not refer to them as such.  Sorry I don't have access to Vernham Deans marriage registers to look for you.

Hi Rosie,  Thankyou for clarification of information on English marriage certificates.  In the
absence of parents' names the witnesses could be of interest, siblings perhaps.  I'm
               always hopeful ;D

Before the onset of Civil Registration (and thus Marriage Certificates) on 1st July 1837, the marriage entry in a Parish Record did not record father's names.

There is an example here:

That was an example of a Marriage entry from a Parish Register, of the kind used from 1874 to 1837!

It was NOT a Marriage Certificate! ;D

Certificates came into being from 1st July 1837 - and from that date the Parish Register entry contained the same information as the Marriage Certificate.

It's a subtle, but important, difference.

Hi Ken,  Of course it was a Parish Record, I did realize that but why I wrote "marriage certificate"
I don't know! ???   Put it down to lack of sleep, with the onset of Spring here the
Kookaburras "laugh" in a gum tree in our garden at 3.30 a.m. every day!  Now
I'm sure that's not a problem you have on the Isle of Man!

When you wrote "1874-1837" what dates did you mean?

Regards,
Jen.

Oops! :-[

I meant 1774-1837.

1774 being the date of Hardwicke's Marriage Act - which defined what should appear on a marriage record.
1837 being the date of the onset of Civil Registration.
