Parkhead Rows, Bellshill, Lanarkshire
« on: Wednesday 18 October 17 03:11 BST (UK) »
I was hoping someone would know if the Parkhead Rows in Bellshill, Larnarkshire, Scotland were the same as the East Parkhead Rows in Bellshill (ie different name same place).

My great grandfather was recorded as living on Hamilton Road, Parkhead Rows in 1901. I can only find a reference to East Parkhead Rows on the Scottish Coal Mining website, and was wondering if they were the same place.

Thanks for your help.

Hamilton Road not shown on old map (1892-1905) - shown on modern map.

This 1910 map has Hamilton Road marked (bottom right hand corner)

Does your ancestor's full address (on the 1901 Census?) read "Parkhead Rows, Hamilton Road, Bothwell, Bellshill, Lanarkshire"?

Would this help with location?

The amount of times I walked down the path from Hamilton Road to the Jewel Scheme/Liberty Road by the tennis courts not realising it was the line of the old railway. I often wondered about the cottage that sat behind the wall with the very long drive from Hamilton Road, as it seemed totally out of place. Did not realise it was called Gardenreach Cottage which is curious as the senior citizens centre across the way is Gardenside. It must have been a very long time ago when there were gardens there. Next to Gardenside running parallel to Strachan street was a row of garages for part of Strachan Street backing on to the Bowling club. Behind the garages running down to the Orb was a high wall I believe this was part of the Parkhead Rows houses. As kids we would climb up on the garages and walk the length of Strachan Street on the wall, which was pretty high to a twelve year old and at the end slide down the light pole, the top of which was just higher than the wall.

If you look at Hanes Teulu's link, Hamilton Road is the road which runs from Viewfield Farm up through East Parkhead rows to Bellshill. If you look at a modern map the rows woul be where Strachan Street and Mansfield Road are. The road that goes off to an angle is where the Orb pub is (as seen in Trainspotting II). That was my post in Urban Glasgow by the way!

Yes I would love a similar site for Lanarkshie.

Should also say the pit bing (slag heap) shown on the old map just behind rhe rows is still a feature of the Bellshill landscape.

Thanks for your replies and help. It was the first time I has used rootschat so I wasn't sure if anyone would answer.

Hanes Teulu and Andrew C - thanks for the map information. Interesting to see the comparison between the old map and the current one. I didn't realize the rows were so close to the pits and the railways. Nice to read a personal account of the area.

The address in the 1901 census is Hamilton Road Parkhead Rows, Bellshill etc.

MonicaL  - no the census entry relating to the Fleming family is not connected to me. It's the Greer family that I was looking at.
